RV Bunker

My apologies if something along these lines has been suggested before, but I'd appreciate any feedback anyone is willing to offer on the following:

I've been thinking about buying some land outside the city and building what would amount to a huge underground garage on it. The garage would actually be above ground, but I'd want it built into a huge dirt mound for the sake of insulation and fortification, and because I'd be trying to avoid the hydrostatic pressure that acts on your typical basement wall.

The idea would be for this space to be able to accomodate an RV. That way if I ever needed to bug out, I could live somewhat comfortably in the RV but I'd also have a fairly decent bunker to park it in.

The other obvious advantage is that I'd be able to talk my wife into buying an RV we could use for tailgating football games at those times when the end of the world isn't imminent.

Thoughts?

It sounds like a good idea to me. Not too expensive and multiuse.

Just having the RV is a good idea in case of relocation.

I have a camper on a couple acres with utilities, very handy.

The archaeologists of th future will be scratching their noggins looking at all the collapsed mounds of dirt that cover a once self propelling "vehicle dwellings". The inhabitants, although located in diverse locations, must have kept in touch with each other as all of them possessed similar items in these mounds. Most notably silver medallions with a picture of a bull or a man with a matchlock and writings "GIM - Gold Is Money - 2007"

They will call this "The GIM Mound Culture"

Sounds like a good idea to me...

Post pics if'n you do it....

Actually, some underground storage/bunker under the Garage might not be a bad addition either.... But will add to the cost and work...

Are you talking concrete?

Its sounds like a great idea!!
I think all of us need to consider some type of permanent storage of at least partial preps at our alternate bug out sites.

Better throw in some VERY good ventilation, since most of your RV components run on propane.

Either that, or keep enough solar panels to run your basics.

I have a similar idea but without an RV... I was going to buy an isolated property and eventually build a house and garage on it. The nifty part was that I am going to bury a couple of shipping containers underground with the idea of having a "secret tunnel" between the house and garage- each entrance hidden (buried deep enough to be a usable fallout shelter as well). You can purchase used shipping containers for around $1500 ea. on the 'net (like ebay). I would eventually stock it up with survival gear, bunks, etc. All fwiw.

Re: RV Bunker

Shipping containers aren't strong enough to bury. Plan on a conventional concrete, block or steel structure is MEANT to be buried. Cheap is NOT the way to go here.

Re: RV Bunker

Use a Qounset Hut or here is ANOTHER Qounset Hut link.

Properly constructed, properly buried, it SHOULD provide you the kind of structure you are trying to make.

I've been considering this type of setup. BUT, the difference is my property is located on the side of the mountain and it will require blasting into solid rock. At THAT point, the Qounset Hut is specifically stuck IN the hole made by blasting. Then filling At least three or four feet up the side more for insulation.

Make SURE you use an extra thick pad. Normal suggestion is a minimum of four inches. Mine will be at least a foot. Concrete is cheap in comparison to building a whole building.

Hope that helps.

I think I'd keep the RV out of the bunker and just use the bunker to store my stuff in. Radon could also be a consideration, let alone other oxygen deprived issues. Save the bunker for when the bombs are dropped, or when storm or other danger comes.

I think about three of those would be about right. lay them out so the fronts could link and have separate exits for each wing. Set them up on blocks with room under them to store stuff, bury up to the roof and then put little peaks on each one to keep them cool in the summer, warmer in the winter. Put a central wood stove in the center where you linked them together. don't forget to put in an observation deck above to serve as deer stand/lookout and you'd be pretty well set. Oh, sell the motors and other drive train parts, tire, etc, to offset the cost.

I been in redneck country too long.
